"his patients as confortable as possible, and there have been no

"complaints.".

In the same paragraph, Dr. Ayres moreover alleges that

in surgical cases, I render very little service. This allegation is

also untrue.) When I held the post of Assistant Superintendent I

operated in good many cases at the Hospital, such as opening of abcess,

tapping for ascites, passing catheter, etc., etc. Whenever the Super-

intendent had to perform capital operations, it was I who generally

administered anaesthetics, and there was not a single fatal accident

during the whole time I was in the Hospital. Twice I performed cranio-

tomy at the Civil Hospital without the assistance of another medical

man.' In one case of hydrocephalus, the mother made a very good re-

as Assistant Superintendent, Dr. J. Stockwell, and afterwards Surgeon-

Major Murray, were appointed Acting Superintendents, and I am not

avare that they ever made any complaints against me.

"of the Army Medical Department, acted alternately in his place; but

"as their services could only be spared from their Military duties

"during the day, Dr. Marques performed the duties at night or in his

"absence I was called upon.".

Dr. #harry in his Annual Report for the same year, refer-

ring to those three gentlemen, stated:-

"4. All three surgeons found that they required regular
